What is the 4:5 aspect ratio?

4:5 is 4 units wide for every 5 units tall. As a decimal that is 0.8, so the height is 1.25 times the width. In a scrolling feed it takes up more screen space than a square, while still showing the whole image without the heavy crop of 9:16.

How to calculate 4:5 dimensions

Height from widthheight = width × 5 ÷ 4
Width from heightwidth = height × 4 ÷ 5
Decimal ratio4 ÷ 5 = 0.8

A 1080 px wide post needs 1080 × 5 ÷ 4 = 1350 px of height, so 1080 × 1350 is the usual export size.

Where 4:5 is used

  • Portrait feed posts: 1080 × 1350 is a popular choice for maximum feed space.
  • Print: 8 × 10 inch prints are 4:5, so the shape is familiar from photo frames.
  • Portrait photography: a natural crop for head-and-shoulders portraits.
From a 3:2 or 4:3 camera photo

A landscape camera photo must be cropped heavily to become 4:5. A portrait-orientation 3:4 photo only loses about 6% of its height. Shoot vertically if you know the post will be 4:5.
